Useful Information on Ecuador
General: Ecuador, officially the Republic of Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country also includes the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometres west of the mainland. It is the second smallest country in South America and is one of only two countries, along with Chile, that do not have a border with Brazil. Ecuador straddles the 'equator', from which it takes its name. Its capital city is Quito, but the country's largest city is Guayaquil. The historic centre of Cuenca is the third largest city. Ecuador is a presidential republic and became independent in 1830 after having been part of the Spanish colonial empire and the republic of Gran Colombia. International telephone country code: +593, Internet: .ec, Electricity voltage: 120V frequency 60 Hz, Electrical outlet: North American/Japanese 2-blade type
Languages: The official language of Ecuador is Spanish. Quichua, an Inca language, is spoken by the Indian population. English is the most spoken foreign language.
Regions: There are 24 provinces divided into four regions: The Coast (La Costa), The Andes Mountains (La Sierra - often referred to as the Highlands), The Amazon (El Oriente), The Galapagos Islands
Major cities: Guayaquil (largest city), Quito (capital city), Cuenca, Santo Domingo, Machala, Manta, Portoviejo, Ambato, Riobamba, Quevedo, Loja, Milagro, Ibarra, Esmeraldas, Babahoyo
International airports: Ecuador is a small country but offers to its travelers comfortable airports in the main cities. There is however a departure tax when leaving from Ecuador’s main international airports. In Quito the tax is presently US$40.80, and in Guayaquil the tax is US$27.16

Taxis: When taking yellow taxis in the major cities you should ensure that the taxi meter is reset. The minimum charge in Quito is USD 1, even if the meter registers less for your journey. You should only use authorised taxis (yellow cabs) that display their taxi registration sticker on the windscreen and doors, as well as the orange license plates. You should avoid hailing taxis on the street and should instead book one through your hotel or by calling a known radio taxi service. Larger supermarkets and airports also have taxi ranks. Before getting into a taxi, agree on a price with the driver. To avoid being overcharged, ask at the hotel what you should expect to pay for the juorney. You should carry plenty of change as most taxi drivers cannot change a $20 or a $10 note.
Currency: The US Dollar is the only legal currency in Ecuador. Ecuador has used the US dollar as its official currency since 2000. Both US coins and Ecuadorian coins (5c, 10c, 25c and 50c coins), which are equivalent to the value of the US coins, are used.
Money: You should ensure you bring enough money in the form of US Dollars (preferably in small denominations up to US$20 notes) or traveller cheques. Credit cards and traveller cheques are generally accepted in the cities. The most common credit card is Diners Club followed by Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
Tipping: In restaurants it is customary to tip a 10% minimum of the total bill if the bill does not include a service charge. Taxi drivers are not commonly tipped.
